The Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School boys varsity tennis team upset Cohasset, defeating the three seed 4-1 on Monday to advance to the South Division 3 semi-final.
The boys varsity tennis team lost Wednesday in the division three south section semifinals 1-4 versus Old Rochester RHS.
All three Vineyard singles players were victorious Monday. First singles Connor Downing won 6-1, 6-1, second singles Zak Danz won 6-0, 6-2 and third singles Dunovan Belisle won 6-2, 6-0. The Vineyard split doubles, with first doubles pair David Webster and Graham Lewis won 3-6, 6-3, 10-3 and second doubles pair Max Hammong and James Kelliher lost 3-6, 2-6. The Vineyard faced extremely windy conditions during the matches, but quick starts in each match helped the boys advance.
The boys previously defeated Sacred Heart 4-1 in the first round of the Division 3 South Sectional.
First singles Connor Downing lost a close match 7-6, 6-4, after missing nearly two weeks with a chest cold. Second singles Zak Danz picked up his team-leading 14th win of the season, winning 6-0, 6-0. Zak made few, if any, errors, and played his best match of the year.
Third singles Dunovan Belisle also won 6-2, 6-0. In doubles, Max Hammond and James Kelliher won easily 6-0, 6-0, while David Webster and Graham Lewis also won, albeit less easily, 6-4, 6-1.
