The Bay State Summer Games are a Massachusetts competition, modeled on the Olympics, that began in 1982. Student athletes from around the state compete in 26 different sports in July. The state is divided into three regions; Martha’s Vineyard belongs to the Southeastern/Coastal region. Student athletes that are in the top five of any event qualify for this team, and will represent this region at the finals, held July 11-12 at Harvard University in Cambridge.
Five Vineyard student athletes qualified, and all will attend the final swim competition in July. They are: Ben Yancey (100 butterfly, 100 breaststroke); Oliver Dorr (50 freestyle, 100 freestyle, 100 butterfly, 100 backstroke); Gabby Carr (200 IM, 200 free, 100 free and 100 back); Harrison Dorr (100 backstroke, 200 backstroke, 200 freestyle); and Evan Sauter (50 freestyle, 100 freestyle, 100 backstroke, 200 backstroke).
Each of these swimmers have been on the Makos swim team and trained by Rainy Goodale, a national champion swimmer and coach of the Makos for the past five years.
