To the Editor:

How wonderful to see kids of all ages enjoying a swim raft at the Vineyard Haven town beach after many decades without. A raft was the center of swim activities at the beach during the ’40s through the ’60s. (I don’t remember when the raft disappeared.) In a matter of days, the raft was busy with families playing, diving, and sunbathing.

As for safety, I think the raft will make swimming safer. The raft itself will alert boaters to the fact that swimmers may be present. Swimmers are more likely to be drawn directly to the raft from the beach, and less likely to be swimming near the end of the pier.

Thanks to all who initiated the revival of a raft, and followed it through to successful completion.
