The 10th annual Vineyard Cup, the Martha’s Vineyard sailing competition hosted by Sail MV, kicked off on Thursday and lasted through Sunday. Lack of wind affected the sailors, which many races being shortened.
In coastal racing, Andrew Staniar took first place, Skip Richheimer took second, and John Stout took third.
The Ocean racing category was divided into four divisions, non-spinnaker class 1, non-spinnaker class 2, spinnaker, and classics. In non-spinnaker class 1, which saw 18 racers, Robert Lurie placed first with 5 points after winning one race and placing second in the other two. Richard and Joan White took second with 8 points, while Roger Becker won third with 13 points.
In non-spinnaker class 2, Bill Marsh won two races and placed third in the other to take first overall with 5 points. James Swent, with 7 points, came in second, while Paul Duffy, with 14 points, came in third. Philip Hale fell one point short of third, and finished with 15.
In the spinnaker division, Stephen Besse came in first place with 4 points. Tom Tetrault and Mark Scheffer both finished with 14 points, tying for second. The classics division, which only raced two events, saw Mathew Barker take first place with 5 points. Jeffery Robinson scored 6 points and came in second, while Jim Malabar placed third with 7 points.
In the kiteboarding event in Cow Bay, participants competed in eight races, totaling their seven lowest scores. This was the first year kiteboarding was included in the Vineyard Cup and had a good turnout, despite not being able to sail Friday or Saturday because of lack of wind. Of the 28 kiteboarders which raced Sunday, Nico Landauer took first place overall and the $10,00 prize after winning seven of the eight races and earning 8 points. Jon Modica scored 12 points, good enough for second place. Ty Reed finished third, with 25 points. Kiting was the only race with a cash prize.
The Menemsha Pond racing was broken into two categories, H-12 and Sunfish, and totaled the scores of two races. In H-12, Charlie Shipway and Dick Bluestein won first place, while Edward Miller won second. Ken Iscol placed third. In Sunfish, Dan Karnovksy won both races to finish first overall. Sydney Karnovsky placed second, and Chloe Rosenberg took third.
