Recent Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School graduate Aubrey Ashmun and rising junior Kylie Hatt helped lead their Coastal hockey team to a 3-0 win in the opening round of the Bay State Games, played Thursday in Foxborough. The two Vineyarders were instrumental in the win. Aubrey earned an assist in the third period, while Kylie was a shutdown defenseman as the Coastal team rolled past the squad from the Metro area.
After two tough defeats, the Coastal team was set to play for the bronze medal on Sunday. Their opponent was the squad from the Northeast, who beat Coastal 4-1 on Saturday, eliminating the team from gold-medal consideration. Coastal earned some revenge, though, with a 4-3 victory that evened their tournament record at 2-2 and secured the team’s bronze medal.
The game was an up and down affair through two periods, but Coastal found themselves down 3-2 halfway through the middle period. Kylie Hatt ripped a wrist shot from the point to tie the game at 3-3 with 5:23 remaining in the period, and then Aubrey Ashmun set up Bourne star Marissa Fitzpatrick with what would prove to be the game winner with 1:33 left in the second. The Coastal team played tight defense in the third as they held on to the 4-3 victory, and earned the Bay State Games bronze medal. Aubrey and Kylie played stellar hockey, and represented themselves and their Vineyard teammates well against elite competition.
