Saturday marks the first official ‘West Tisbury Day’

Anthony Esposito

When Alexandra London-Thompson, director of children’s programs for the Martha’s Vineyard Film Festival (TMVFF), realized that the TMVFF’s not-to-be missed family event of the summer, Cinema Circus, was scheduled for the very same day as the First Congregational Church’s annual Peach Festival and the West Tisbury library’s frozen yogurt social, she knew something had to be done. Each of the popular events traditionally brings hundreds of visitors to the same area of historic West Tisbury. There was no use in hosting competing events; why not combine the fun and get others in on it too? West Tisbury Day was born.

This Saturday, August 15, a host of events across the Grange Hall, West Tisbury playground, West Tisbury library, Field Gallery, 7a Foods, the First Congregational Church of West Tisbury, and Alley’s General Store will take place, promising an action-packed day for the whole family. Here’s what’s in store:

Alley’s General Store: A summer isn’t complete without a trip to Alley’s, the oldest operating retailer on Martha’s Vineyard. Shop their eclectic mix of products, from fishing lures to toys, to groceries and hardware supplies. You won’t leave empty-handed.

7 am–5 pm

7a Foods: Grab breakfast, lunch, or a baked good to go from this farm-to-takeout restaurant that serves daily frittata, farm-fresh salads, hearty soups, artisan sandwiches, and a variety of prepared foods.

9 am–12 pm

The West Tisbury Farmers Market: A weekly summer tradition featuring almost 40 vendors, with a wide range of products from around the Island, including local produce, Grey Barn cheeses, baked goods, Chilmark Coffee, and more at the Grange Hall.

10 am–5 pm

The Field Gallery: Visit the fine art gallery for unique exhibits both inside and out. Featuring work by Island artists Jhenn Watts, Michael Stimola, Jessica Pisano, Colin Ruel, and many others.

12–4 pm

Peach Festival: The First Congregational Church hosts the sixth annual Peach Festival, featuring fresh peaches, smoothies, peach shortcake, and Mad Martha’s peach ice cream made especially for the day. Baked goods and treats of all kinds will be available to take home: peach pies, parfaits, blueberry-peach cobblers, and homemade jams.

3–7 pm

Cinema Circus: TMVFF premiere family event of the summer, featuring a full afternoon of fun for all ages. Activities include filmmaking, acting, and improvisation workshops, live shows, face painting, balloon art, Truly Scrumptious food for kids and adults, dress-up, craft-making, and a screening of international short films. Events will take place at the Grange Hall and the West Tisbury playground. $10 for kids and adults are free.

4–5 pm

Frozen Yogurt Social: Join the West Tisbury library in celebrating summer with an afternoon of music by the a cappella group Vineyard Sound and free yogurt from Tisberry.
