Under a broiling sun, Sandy Marx of Chappaquiddick and Haverford, Penn., won the Martha’s VIneyard Rod and Gun Club trap championship Sunday.

Mr. Marx, shooting next to his wife Louise, the 2013 trap champ, broke 38 of 50 targets on the club range overlooking Sengekontacket Pond in Edgartown.

Brian Welch of Oak Bluffs finished second with a score of 36, and Ray Sylvia of Vineyard Haven, 2014 champ, placed third with 35 targets.

Unlike skeet, in which competitors shoot at crossing clay targets (birds) in turn from eight stations, in trap, competitors shoot at targets going away at unpredictable angles from five stations.

The club is located at the end of Third Street in Edgartown.
