To the Editor:
The Martha’s Vineyard Times brought good news to the residents of Ocean Heights. Through the joint efforts of The MV Times and Edgartown Harbormaster Charlie Blair, the Ocean Heights boat landing has been cleaned up. Derelict boats and abandoned trailers have been hauled away, and this well-used and busy town property looks better. The landing has a history of being an eyesore, and we look forward to a program of proper maintenance and enforced regulation. The directors of the Friends of Sengekontacket wish to express their appreciation to Charlie and The Times.
Harbormaster Charlie Blair has also promised to enforce mooring permit regulations, and said that boats and kayaks left at the landing after Oct. 1 will be removed. The Friends built the two kayak racks at the landing in order to bring some order to kayak storage, and previously encouraged the Town of Edgartown to clean the place up. Unfortunately, Ocean Heights does not have a homeowners’ association, so it is important that neighbors work with Charlie and the town to keep the landing in order. A good example of community activism is represented by Ned Casey and Dean Grant, who brought the poor condition of the landing to the attention of the harbormaster and the Edgartown Board of Selectmen. The Friends previously proposed to Edgartown a maintenance plan and regulations for the landing, and during 2015–16 will do so again.
Thank you, Harbormaster Blair, Ned, Dean, and The MV Times, for getting the job done.
