To the Editor:
Something amazing happened this week. My family and I have two parakeets whom we frequently let out in the house to fly. Our male, Al, went flying toward our kids’ room, and wasn’t seen for days.
Now, budgies perch and hide everywhere, so I wasn’t concerned at first. With school out and two kids home, I figured he got lost in a closet somewhere. On a whim, I posted a message on Islanders Talk (I’m pretty new to all this Facebook stuff), and in the morning there was a message. West Tisbury animal control said a blue budgie was hanging around West Tisbury. It all happened so fast. I raced down to Old Courthouse Road (passing it a time or two) to find two of the nicest people ever. They had been observing our Al since Saturday, four days previous. He had plenty of bird feeders, a small pond, and other pieces of paradise there. We eventually brought his mate Peggy, and she sat at our new friends Geoffrey and Barbara Beresford’s house to try to lure him in. An afternoon and some millet later, we got him! Five and a half nights later, a fight with a chipmunk, and the great hospitality of the Beresfords, he is now safely home.
Thank you so much to animal control, Geoffrey, and Barbara, for everyone’s quick action and attentiveness, as I thought we had lost him for good.
