On a perfectly sunny Labor Day holiday, about 50 runners and walkers joined the third annual Friends of the Edgartown Library Pennywise Path Run/Walk, a 5K to raise money for future programs at the soon-to-be-finished new Edgartown Library.
Once all the cost were tallied, including the bill for T-shirts, the race was pretty much a wash in terms of fundraising, but all of the participants had a good time, race organizers said.
Participants began at 18th Street and ran down Pennywise Path, then turned onto Edgartown–West Tisbury Road and finished at the Edgartown School.
Last year, the race snaked through the school’s parking lot, but this year the starting line was pushed back, allowing for a straightaway finish. Vineyard Haven’s Reaan Steenkamp, 48, finished first for the second straight year. Fourteen-year-old Ryan Oosting, of Arlington, finished second, while 14-year-old Edgartown resident Catherine Cherry finished first among women and seventh overall.
Here are the top 10 finishers: 1. Reaan Steenkamp, 48, Vineyard Haven, 18:26; 2. Ryan Oosting, 14, Arlington, 19:25; 3. Michael Robertson, 33, Andover, 20:02; 4. Hudson Lee, 31, Tisbury, 20:48; 5. Paulo DeOliveria, 31, Edgartown, 21:21; 6. Peter Hatt, 49, Edgartown, 21:26; 7. Catherine Cherry, 14, Edgartown, 23:10; 8. Bill Foley, 57, Amherst, 23:22; 9. Saskia Oosting, 49, Arlington, 23:29; 10.
