Tisbury Police are searching for the person responsible for spray-painting signs and vehicles in the area of Main Street and Daggett Avenue sometime between Sunday night, Sept. 6, and Monday morning, Sept. 7.

On Tuesday, Detective Kindia Roman said a suspect had not been identified. She said the number of vandalism incidents in that general area this summer has been unusual.

“It’s not really typical, generally speaking, of vandalism here,” she said. “It’s been kind of unusual for it to all happen at once. I can’t figure why that happened in such a concentrated area; it’s not a usual thing.”

Five cars had spots of white spray paint, according to a police report. A number of road signs had words and letters whited out, while others had “unintelligible markings,” symbols, or words painted on. Some of the words and symbols were obscene in nature, police said.

Officer Jeremie Rogers responded to the area after an anonymous caller contacted the Tisbury Police Department at 10:15 am Monday to report vandalism to the stop signs and telephone poles in the area.

“The reporting party stated he had called the station last night at some point and reported the incident to an officer, but nobody responded,” the police report said.

“Once at the intersection of Daggett Ave. and North William St. I observed paint applied to stop signs and other street signs at this intersection,” Officer Rogers said. “I then walked back down Daggett Ave. toward Main St. and proceeded to walk up Main St., where I observed additional paint applied to street signs, the roadway itself, a large mirror mounted on a pole, and an additional telephone pole.”

Officer Rogers noted 14 incidents of vandalism in the report. Anyone with information is asked to call the Tisbury Police Department at 508-696-4240.
