To the Editor:
I wish to comment on the article about the Bradley Square property in Oak Bluffs. (Sept. 17, “Bradley Square gridlocked, again”).
Really? The Martha’s Vineyard Commission (MVC) thinks this is a development of regional impact?
Exactly what is the regional impact of demolishing this dilapidated building? A development of regional impact is something like a casino in Aquinnah
or a Trump Towers 30-story hotel on South Beach.
It is cases like this that undermine the credibility of agencies like the MVC. Note the calls in the online comment section of this newspaper for the disbanding of the whole organization.
The MVC plays an important role in managing development on the Island. It is a useful and necessary organization with the tools and legal authority to preserve our Island’s character.
Unfortunately, it seems the commissioners have lost sight of the original objectives and goals that were the impetus for the MVC’s existence. In my opinion, the commissioners are “understepping” their authority. They have more important work to do than harassing property owner Matt Viaggio.
