You are invited to the Minnesingers’ annual silent and live auction at 7 pm tomorrow night at Atria in Edgartown. The kids come from all over the island. The Tisbury kids are Ben Nadelstein, Casey McAndrews, Kayla Vecchia-Zeitz, Emily Hewson, Michaela Piche, Debbie Soares, Barbara DePaula, and Devon Teves. They all work hard to produce such beautiful music. Help support the Minnesingers tomorrow.
The time has come. The Mass. Memories Road Show is Sunday. A family’s most valuable treasure is its memories. Often a photograph keeps this memory alive. Bring your photographs to save online forever as part of the record celebrating Martha’s Vineyard. You can choose only three photos of people or things precious to you from your or the Island’s past. It costs nothing but time.
This is your chance to preserve your history on our island. This is personal, just for you. The event is at the Hebrew Center on Sunday from 10 to 3. This collection of photographs special to islanders is sponsored by our libraries. Remember this photo will be online forever. For more information, ask at any Island library.
Next Tuesday at 7 pm at our library is a special treat called, “A League of Their Own.” Betty Burton says that it was filmed in her hometown, and her mother has a small role in it. She earned enough money to purchase a coveted mink coat. In this story about the All-American Girls’ Professional Baseball League, you will see Tom Hanks, Genna Davis, Rosie O’Donnell, Madonna, and Betty’s mother. Roger Ebert noted, “the way this early chapter of women’s liberation fit into the hidebound traditions of professional baseball.” Rated PG, and you get free popcorn and cider.
Have you got too much fabric or yarn? Of course, you do. Get rid of what you can’t use and take it to the library. Then you will have room so you can buy more. The Friends of the Vineyard Haven Library will hold a Fabric and Yarn Sale on Nov. 14. Drop stuff at the library between November 1 and ten during regular library hours. On sale day the yarn, fabric, and needles will be bargain-priced, fabrics $1 a yard and wool $1 a skein. You can even fill a bag for $10 in the last hour. All proceeds benefit the library.
Did you know Featherstone offers classes on Tapestry and Origami Christmas Stars as well as All Things Mac and No Fear iPad? All affordable. Call 508-693-1850.
We’ve had much too much excitement the past two weeks. My husband Donald broke his hip and was sent to Massachusetts General for a few days before he had surgery there. A few days later he traveled to Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital in Sandwich to learn how to walk again. All that just because we decided to go out for dinner on our 54th anniversary. We have treasured the love and support from so many of our friends here on the Island. We are fortunate that he wanted to retire to the island of his birth. I cannot imagine a more loving and caring place anywhere.
Are you ready for turkey? The First Baptist Church is offering pre-Thanksgiving dinner on Saturday, Nov. 7. That’s turkey and stuffing, with potatoes, squash, green bean casserole, and pie — all for a $17 donation to the church — served at 5 or 6:30 pm. Seating is limited, so you should call 508-693-1539 for reservations.
The Martha’s Vineyard Chamber Music Society announces The Drama of Live Opera at the West Tisbury library at 7:30 pm a week from Friday. The program will range from popular pieces to some surprises, with Boston stars Bethany Worrell and Vincent Turregano and pianist Diane Katzenberg Braun. The event is free, so plan to arrive early.
Congratulations to Paul Angelastro and his wife, the former Heather Chapman, on the birth of their first child, Ryan Hudson Angelastro. Ryan arrived last Sunday, weighing in at 9 pounds, 2 ounces. This big boy is the grandson of John Chapman and the late Laurel Chapman.
Big bunches of birthday balloon wishes go out on Sunday to Paul Angelastro. He will also be celebrating the birth of his one-week-old son. Happy birthday, greetings go to Jeff Kristal, who parties at the Crocker House Inn next Tuesday.
