The Martha’s Vineyard varsity golf team, coached by Doug Debettencourt, finished a great season on Monday by taking second place at the Division III state finals in Cummaquid. Playing against 11 other teams from Massachusetts, the team posted a total score of 327, beating all but the champion team from Weston, which won with 304.

The Islanders whose scores counted toward the total were Finn Simpkins (72), Mason Jeffers (84), Chris Mayhew (85), and Kaitlyn Marchand (86). Max Santos and Zak Danz also played. Simpkins’ performance, above par by one, put him in second place individually state-wide.

The state final marked the end of a good year for the team, with a record of 9 wins, 6 losses and 1 tie. To compete in Cummaquid, the team first had to distinguish itself from the other 61 teams that qualified for the Division III tournament, and then from the 11 other teams that qualified for the Cape Cod state sectionals, where the Vineyard players took first place last Monday.

In the state sectionals at the Dennis Highland golf course, the team totaled 315, with counting scores from Finn Simpkins, Max Santos, Zak Danz, and Chris Mayhew. Players Taber Caron, Jack Murray, and David Krauthamer did not compete in state sectionals or finals, but contributed to the team’s season.
