Paintings by William Carter are on display at the Vineyard Haven library. These are oil paintings of lovely landscapes, including swans and the Gay Head Lighthouse. He mostly paints copies of photographs that appeal to him. He happily assured me that he has only been painting since January, and is very enthusiastic about his work. See it at the library through this month.
Our library opened last Sunday from noon to 4 pm. The library will be open Sundays through the winter, except for a few holidays. Watch for special programs.
You can add to the photos online for the Martha’s Vineyard section of the Mass. Memories Roadshow. UMass has arranged for the Vineyard Haven and Chilmark libraries to scan some additional photographs that tell the story of our Island, but only for another week or two. Select two or three special memories captured in a picture and bring them to the library. There is no fee.
I have a new smartphone. The only problem is that it is smarter than I am. I still need to learn how to swipe. How can you type on the tiny keypad? Our account was in my husband’s name, and getting my name on the account so I could buy a new phone was nearly impossible. Brandon at Verizon in the Edgartown Post Office Square spent over an hour, but finally did what was needed. I know everyone there is very helpful, because I’ve been there before. Of course I will be dropping in again. It is nice to be able to take care of such things here on the Island.
On Sunday at 4 pm, enjoy “Stories for a Starry Night — For Love of a Small Island,” with Susan Klein’s stories about growing up and photographs by Alan Brigish, as Gary Girouard plays his original solo piano scores. He appeared at Carnegie Hall on Oct. 24. Tickets are $20 at the Martha’s Vineyard Film Center.
Wednesday is Veterans Day. Take a minute to give thanks for those who risked their lives to keep our country free. Remember all the soldiers and sailors out there now for us. Fly your flag on Wednesday. The veterans can use your help at Oak Grove Cemetery as well, putting up and taking down all the memorial flags. Call 508-693-6214.
You still have time to make a reservation for 5 or 6 pm. Don’t miss the pre-Thanksgiving Dinner on Saturday at the parish house of the First Baptist Church. It’s a complete turkey dinner with just what you expect. Call 508-693-1539 to reserve; limited seating at the door.
The free annual Health Fair is a week from Saturday, Nov. 14, from 9 am to 1 pm at the cafeteria in the Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School. Meet with health care providers. Learn about “Lyme Disease — How It Affects You” with Dr. Roni DeLuz at 10 am. Then at 11, Marie Doubleday will speak about “Hidden Issues with Drug Abuse” in the high school library. This event is sponsored by MV NAACP.
Congratulations to Duncan MacDonald. She celebrated her 100th birthday yesterday. Most of those years were spent here, writing and supporting such things as literacy and the Scottish Society. Big bunches of birthday balloon wishes go out tomorrow to Sam Myers. Happy birthday to Buffy Hanschka on Saturday.
