On Saturday, Nov. 7 (rain date Nov. 8), the Vision Council is sponsoring a guided walking tour of Lake Tashmoo. It begins promptly at 10 am and will last about two hours. Walkers should meet at the Tashmoo Overlook.
According to a press release, Lake Tashmoo and the Water Works are “amazing resources, town treasures identified during the 2014 Vision Workshops.” The tour will explore the 23-acre parcel of land, which stretches from the Tashmoo Overlook down to Lake Tashmoo, and includes the scenic view from the Tashmoo Overlook, a large open field bordered by ancient stone walls, the sledding hill, the recently restored Tashmoo Spring Building, a freshwater pond with an abandoned herring run, a small boat launching area, and an amphitheater.
This is a unique opportunity to learn more about one of the town’s greatest resources and to consider both the opportunities present at this site and the importance of its future stewardship.
Guides will share their knowledge of the site’s ecological processes and cultural significance. Bob Woodruff, the former executive director of the Vineyard Conservation Society, will talk about the glacial formation of the area and its ecological features. Randy Jardin, from Cultural Resources on the Wampanoag Tribal Council, will also be onsite.
At the conclusion of the walk, discussion will continue at the Tashmoo Spring Building. Refreshments will be served. Participants should dress appropriately for the weather, wear warm, waterproof footgear, and bring water.
For parking, drive through the stone pillars east of the Tashmoo Overlook and park along that road. Do not park at the overlook or along the highway.
