To the Editor:
Thank you to the community for the help and support we received raising funds for a community center in Ile à Vache, Haiti. We were able to raise $3,058 so far, and we expect that people will be sending in more checks.
Nancy Aronie and the Chilmark Writing Workshop very generously donated a gift certificate valued at $495, which may be purchased, and all the money will go to the Ile à Vache Community Center. There are also three Haitian paintings left for sale.
The weekend started off with a bake sale at Cronig’s on Friday, organized by Emily Sims Solarazza, that raised $300. A fundraiser on Sunday night was a big success. Rick Bausman, Roberta Kirn, Anthony Esposito and Paul Thurlow played wonderful Haitian rhythms, and we had a photo show of our trip to Haiti rotating on a big screen. Everyone brought yummy potluck dishes. Jeanne Staples came with many creations from the Haiti Peacequilt Ladies Sewing Cooperatives for sale (haitipeacequilts.org). Sammie Altema gave a little speech thanking people for coming on behalf of the community center, and letting everyone know what the center would like to offer for classes in the future. These include sex education, hygiene instruction, family education, leadership training, business training, English lessons, musical instruction, art education, and theater.
We are still accepting donations to the Haiti Fund. Please send your check to Sense of Wonder Creations, P.O.. Box 1558, Vineyard Haven, MA 02568. Make it out to Sense of Wonder Creations. The Martha’s Vineyard community’s stars shine brightly in our beautiful universe.
