According to a press release, Vineyard Golf Club in Edgartown has been named “Best New Private Course” in 2015 by Golf Magazine, following a comprehensive redesign of its original course. This annual award is highly contested, and considered prestigious within the golfing world.
The new course was designed by Gil Hanse, a renowned golf course architect who recently completed the Olympic golf course in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, the site of the 2106 Summer Olympics.
Mr. Hanse’s redesign of the Vineyard Golf Club was completed in time for the 2015 season. The course is laid out as a walking course, winding through 235 acres of naturally rolling land.
Jeff Carlson, VGC golf course superintendent, said the three-year renovation project has
transformed the course: “Gil’s vision was to create a golf course that mimics the beaches and
wind-scoured dunes that line the south side of the Island. To that end, he scattered over
300,000 square feet of meandering, craggy sand bunkers splashed with patches of scrub, fescue, and a little bluestem. The result is a visually unforgettable course that is fun for all levels of play.”
Vineyard Golf Club opened in 2002, and was the first new golf course to be built on Martha’s
Vineyard in 30 years. The course is one of the few 100 percent organic golf courses in America.
