More on that tiny house

To the Editor:

I was home for the Thanksgiving holiday and catching up on all of my Martha’s Vineyard newspaper reading (I am based in Europe, while my parents are on the Island year-round). In the process I read the lovely article from July 9, “A Visit with Kathy Rose, Tiny House Pioneer,” by Valerie Sonnenthal.

I think it is fabulous you highlighted smaller living and interviewed her. I want to add another key bit of information. In the interview you asked who built the tiny house. The answer is my stepfather, Virgil Bekius. I was on-Island visiting when he was constructing it, and I was very impressed. He is an incredible designer, builder, and creator who has worked on many projects on the Island for over 15 years. I found out from him that he got the design for the house from Tumbleweed Tiny House Co. and then adapted it and made some small, unique changes.

I am writing because I think he is a talented craftsman with great attention to detail. I believe he deserves a bit of credit for the house. I know it had a few different owners, but I thought you would like to know, and maybe at some point it will be shared with the tiny house owners. My stepfather would never boast about his skill set, but I believe it is important to celebrate it. Plus the tiny house should know its history. Virgil’s website is ibuildonmv.com.
