The Makos competitive swim team competed at its last meet of the season on Nantucket on Saturday and Sunday, against teams within the South East Massachusetts Swim Team League (SEMSL).
The Makos team represented the Vineyard very well, and many swimmers finished in the top 10. Gabby Carr placed first in all her events: 50 freestyle, 50 backstroke, and 100 freestyle. This placed her higher than any other female swimmer in her age group, making her one of three Makos swimmers to achieve a high-point award — she won the award for the 11/12 girls group. Annabelle Brothers won the most points and the award for 9/10 girls after receiving first place for both the 50 backstroke and the 100 IM, as well as second place for her 50 freestyle. Harrison Dorr won the 15 and older boys high-point award after he placed second in three events: 50 free, 50 back, and 100 free.
At Saturday’s 10 and under championship, the following swimmers also achieved great success: C.J. Walsh received second place for her 50 finish in the breaststroke, and two third places for her 50 and 100 freestyle finishes; Christian Flanders swam to second place in both his 50 and 100 freestyles, and third place for his 50 breaststroke. Andy Carr dropped substantial time in all his events, and placed sixth for the 50 backstroke.
At Sunday’s 11 and older meet, the 11/12 boys placed second in the 200 IM relay, with swimmers Ben Yancey, Oliver Dorr, Robert Goodale, and Ruairi Mullin contributing to an exciting race. Renee Goodale scored second place for the 100 IM and the 50 breaststroke, and placed third for the 50 freestyle. Ruairi Mullin dropped 3.22 seconds off his 50 free to place fourth. Oliver Dorr placed first in the 50 backstroke, and took third place for both the 50 butterfly and the 100 freestyle. Robert Goodale placed second for the 50 breaststroke and fourth for the 100 IM. Ben Yancey dropped time in all his races, and took seventh place in the 50 butterfly and eighth in the 50 backstroke. Eleanor Hyland dropped 7 seconds in her 100 freestyle to take sixth place for the team, and seventh place in her 50 freestyle.
The Makos competitive swim team is coached by Rainy Goodale. The next season of competitive swimming starts in September. For more information about this program, visit ymcamv.org.
