The Martha’s Vineyard Masters Swim Team, affiliated with the Y, took second place in the small team category at the New England Short Course Championships held at Harvard University. The four-day meet spanned two weekends and included close to 900 participants.

Rainy Goodale, who also serves as coach of the team, had a superb meet.  She entered 12 events, winning eight of them and setting two New England records in the process. In the four events she didn’t win, she took three seconds and a third place. Rainy also swam on two first-place relays and one third-place relay. She now holds seven New England records.

In addition to Rainy, Vineyard swimmers Leslie Craven, Jennifer Passafiume, Elizabeth Goodell, Jonathan Chatinover, and Jason Snow competed.

Competing separately as the Phoenix group, Todd McGee took 20th place in the 50 Free and Eric Turner took 18th place in the same event. The Phoenix group is coached by Les Cutler.

The meet began on Saturday, March 12, with distance day — the 1000 and 1650 freestyle events. Jennifer and Leslie took second place in their age groups and Jonathan placed fourth.

The meet concluded this past weekend with a full slate of events on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.

Over the course of the tournament, the Vineyard scored 615 total team points, beating 2015’s total of 529 points. With their team total, the Vineyard earned the second place plaque for small teams (4-12 participants).
