MV United had four teams take to the pitch on a soggy and rainy Saturday. One team played at home, while the other three took to the road.
MV United U13 Boys 6, Sandwich 1
The MV United U13 boys team started their season with a decisive win against Sandwich. The score was level at the end of the first half, as the steady rain made the playing conditions more than challenging. After the half the Vineyard opened up and didn’t look back, scoring five goals by the end of the 35-minute half. Nick Cowan, Lucas Reis, Christopher DaSilva, Eli Saunier, and Joshua Dix (2) scored goals. The U13 boys take on Dartmouth this Saturday at 11 am at Veterans Field.
MV United U14 Boys 4, Mariner 0
The MV United U14 boys boarded the 9:30 am boat and headed for a matchup against Mariner. Field conditions were less than perfect, but that didn’t stop the boys from walking away with a 4-0 win. MV started strong, and tried to use their speed up front. At the four-minute mark, Ben Taylor sent the ball over the middle to Emanuel Silva. Emanuel beat the defense and the goalie, giving the Vineyard a 1-0 lead. At the 21-minute mark, Jack Holmes fed Emanuel, who notched his second goal of the game. As the first half was winding down, Ben Taylor found Jaiden Edelman, who sent a shot on goal. The goalie made the stop, but the wet ball skipped away from him. That’s when Morgan Estrella found it, and knocked it home for a 3-0 lead going into the half. Mariner finally changed the momentum and took control late in the second half, but couldn’t beat Vineyard keeper Adam Knight. The Vineyard then tallied its fourth goal of the game to seal the win. Players crowded Adam in goal and congratulated him on the shutout. It’s back to practice this week, as the boys prepare for another road game against Seekonk on Saturday.
MV United U11 Boys 3, Seekonk 1
The MV United U11 boys played their home opener against Seekonk. Goals were scored by Ryan Koster, Darien Kral, and Luke Yuhas.
Oceana 5, MV United U14 Girls 0
The U11 girls traveled to Mashpee and stepped off the bus, only to be told their game was canceled. The U10 boys and the U18 boys both had their Sunday matches postponed due to the weather.
MV United has three home games scheduled this Saturday: The U13 boys take on Dartmouth at 11 am; the U11 girls take on Norton at 1:30 pm; and the U14 girls battle Yarmouth Dennis at 3 pm.
