Happy vacation week, one and all. If you have not started preparing for the summer, you might want to start thinking about it now. Restaurants and shops are starting to open. The Menemsha Market is open on weekends already. The Chilmark Store will open in mid-May, as will the Chilmark Tavern. The shops at the Cliffs will be opening up. Not sure what is happening with the Aquinnah Shop, but hopefully it will be open. Fingers crossed. I truly hope that we have seen the last of the snow and frost. The daffodils are in full bloom, our outdoor shower is on, and I hear crowds of pinkletinks wherever I go. There’s no going back now.
The library scheduled some extra activities for vacation week. This afternoon from 2 to 4 pm, you can make a butterfly out of a paper roll. Story time is at 3 pm. Also tonight at 5:30 pm is the Book Group meeting; they will discuss “The Circle” by Dave Eggers. Snacks will be served, and you can vote on the next book. On Saturday, April 23, from 11am to 3 pm, you can make Faux Stained Glass using wax paper and Sharpies, and there will be a Pokémon Party from noon to 2 pm. On Tuesday, April 26, at 5:30 pm, there will be a craft for adults: card making. You can make cards for moms, dads, and graduates.
This is the last week of Pathways at the Chilmark Tavern. This Friday, April 22, there is an EP release party for Alex Karalekas. On Saturday, April 23 is the “Grand Finale: A Thank You to Marianne Goldberg.” Everyone is invited to join in and show appreciation for all Pathways artists and supporters. The evening will be a special tribute to Pathways founder Marianne Goldberg, who passed away this winter. The “Grand Finale” will be an evening of food, musical guests, poets, writers, champagne, videographers, dancers, and most important, cake. There will be music by Rick Padilla, Dana Edelman, and Charles Giordano, and dance by Jesse Keller, poetry and writing by Natasha Taylor, fellow columnist Valerie Sonnenthal, and Sian Williams, among others. There will be video by Danielle Mulcahy and Richard Skidmore. There will also be a lot of art on display and locally made products for sale. So stop on in, even if it’s just for a glass of champagne and to browse. The evening begins at 7 pm. As always, events are free. Pathways will reopen in November 2016.
The documentary “Operation Lighthouse Rescue,” about moving the Gay Head Lighthouse, will air May 4 at 9 pm on PBS. Tune in to see the condensed version of what we all lived through the past few years.
The movie night at the library last week was packed. They showed “Hotel Transylvania” and served pizza. I went with my son, and we watched the whole film with Olive, Violet, Brian, Novella, Maizelle, Lucille, and Hazel. The kids’ area was strewn with pillows, beanbags, and kids. Nearly everyone had seen the movie, and would call out when a favorite part came up. There is something special about watching a movie all together on the floor of our little library.
Riley Ignacio-Cameron is off to Italy with the Charter School. He celebrated his 14th birthday in style there last week. And big congratulations to Spa Tharpe and Anja May, who are engaged!
