With teams hitting the midway point in their spring season, MV United had another strong showing on the pitch, both home and away. We enjoyed a beautiful Saturday with four home games played at Veteran’s Fields in Vineyard Haven. It was great to see games being played side by side with fans and players sticking around to cheer other teams on.
U14 girls 1, Wareham 0
The U14 girls walked off the pitch on Saturday with a great 1-0 away win over Wareham. Kate Howell scored the lone goal late in the second half, with the assist going to Alexa Pil. The defense was anchored by Kaya Siemann and great goalkeeping by Ruby Reimann, who notched the shutout.
U14 boys 2, Freetown Lakeville 1
The U14 boys hosted Freetown Lakeville on Saturday in the second of three consecutive home games. The Vineyard struggled to control the ball throughout the first half. Both teams exchanged scoring chances without anything to show for it. Then in the 25th minute, Freetown Lakeville finally put one in the back of the net for a 1-0 lead going into the half. The Vineyard came out shooting in the second, and their efforts paid off in the 42nd minute. That’s when Robe Della Torre scored and tied the game 1-1. Then in the 56th minute, Patrick Flaherty brought the ball down the right side. His beautiful cross found Moushe Oliveira at the far post, and he headed in the go-ahead goal. With Jojo Bonneau’s stellar defensive play and Adam Knight having another great day in goal, the boys held on for a 2-1 victory.
