Vineyard track teams stand out at EAC championships

The Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School boys and girls track teams competed in the EAC championships Wednesday, May 18, and came home with three victories in the boys meet and four victories for the girls.

Olivia Smith and Chase Silvia were double winners in their events. Smith ran 16.02 seconds for first in the 100m high hurdles, and jumped 16′ 11.5″ to win the long jump. Silvia was also a winner at hurdles, with 63.65 seconds at the 400m low hurdles. He was two full seconds better than the runner-up from Bishop Feehan. Silvia also won the high jump with a 5′ 10” effort.

Also taking EAC honors were Ashlee Moreis in the discus (85′) and Madison Moreis in the high jump (5′). Ennis Foster had the most impressive performance of the day, winning the long jump with a season-best 22′ 2″. His mark was 17″ better than the second-place finisher, and qualified him for the Emerging Elite national meet, to be held June 17 in North Carolina.

“It was one of those moments when everyone near the jumping pits went ‘Ohh’ — a slam-dunk track style,” Coach Joe Schroeder commented.

The boys team placed fourth overall with 53 points. The girls were third with 90 points, three less than runner-up Somerset Berkley.

Several Vineyarder girls placed in the top three in their events. Second-place finishers were Julia Hart, triple jump (personal best, 33′ 1.25″); Whitney Schroeder, javelin (89′ 4″); Rose Engler, 1 mile (personal best, 5:33); and the 4x100m relay team of Hart, Madison Moreis, Natalijia Lakis, and Smith. Lakis ran the 200m (fourth place), the 100m trials and final (third), and was part of the second-place relay. “Natalijia showed tremendous leadership today,” noted Coach Schroeder.

Next up for the team is the Division Championships at Norwell on May 28.

Each event has standards that must be met during the season in order to compete. For the girls, Lakis (100m, 200m), Hart (triple jump, 400m hurdles), Smith (100m hurdles, long jump), Madison Moreis (high jump), Ashlee Moreis (discus), Schroeder (javelin), and Engler (mile, two-mile) qualified. The 4x100m relay team also qualified.

For the guys, Jake Janak (400m), Silvia (high jump, 400m hurdles), Andrei Bernier (javelin), Foster (long jump, triple jump), Jerry DaSilvia (long jump, triple jump), and the 4x100m relay team of Bernier, DaSilvia, Janak, and Foster.
