Samuel B. Issokson died peacefully early Tuesday morning, June 14, 2016, at the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital, with family and friends at his bedside.
He was 95 years old. A happy but quiet man who was born, went to school, and never lived anywhere else but Martha’s Vineyard. He loved the Island, and was an awardwinning photographer and ham radio operator. He was the owner and operator of Issokson’s Cleaners along with his brother Yale. He was an ensign, a radioman, in the Merchant Marines during World War II.
He is survived by his three children, Suzanne Issokson Matthews, Peter Issokson, Jeffrey Issokson, four grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, his sister Doris Shumrak, and the love of his life and longtime companion of 30 years, “my Rosie,” Rose Vigor.
A graveside service will be held at the Martha’s Vineyard Hebrew Cemetery, West Spring Street, Vineyard Haven, on Wednesday, June 15, at 4 pm, officiated by Rabbi Caryn Broitman, with military honors provided by the veterans of Martha’s Vineyard, and a Masonic funeral service offered by the Oriental–Martha’s Vineyard Masonic Lodge.
