To the Editor:

I drove a tour bus for many years, and watched in horror as irresponsible idiots on mopeds darted in and out of traffic, putting themselves and others at risk. I brushed it off as “morons on vacation” until the day a moped with two people on it crossed in front of my bus, causing me to hit the brakes so abruptly it threw people off their seats. The couple fell off, and skidded on the dirt-covered asphalt into oncoming traffic as my customers screamed. By some miracle, the oncoming car avoided them, and the ones who followed stopped to help. I got back in the bus knowing the riders were reasonably OK, and finished the “Martha’s Vineyard thrill ride tour.” My clients were generous, and left the Island seeing firsthand just how dangerous mopeds are. I don’t think the Island can stand anymore catastrophic accidents. The ones we have had over the past few years are enough for me. I ask that if you feel the same, please speak up.
