Applications for the Betty Ann Lima-Bryant Scholarship must be submitted to the Permanent Endowment for Martha’s Vineyard by March 15. According to a press release, the scholarship was created to memorialize Ms. Lima-Bryant, who died in 1994. The scholarship is awarded annually “to further the education of a Vineyard resident who has demonstrated a commitment to community service and human rights.” To date, scholarship recipients have included high school seniors on the way to college, those already attending college, and older Islanders pursuing postgraduate degrees.
A native of Edgartown, Ms. Lima-Bryant was widely respected as a tireless advocate for people in need who were unaware of the services to which they were entitled. She lived in Chilmark, where she served as selectman and tax collector. She was also a Dukes County commissioner.
