To the Editor:

As a lifelong Democrat, I was delighted when President Obama won re-election. Given what has transpired since, however, a strong case can be made that our country would have been better off if Obama had lost.

I have a good opinion of Mitt Romney. He is a well-informed, thoughtful, conscientious, honorable man. None of these terms describe the current White House occupant. Had Romney won, he would have been the Republican nominee in 2016, and we would have been spared whatever awaits us from a Trump presidency.

As much as I admire Obama, I am afraid that the benefits of a second Obama term may be outweighed by the havoc that four — or eight — years of Trump will visit upon our nation. Yet who could ever have imagined in 2012 that American voters would ever sink so low as to disgrace themselves by putting in the Oval Office a pathological, bizarre loose cannon like Trump?
