To the Editor:
I own my own moped, as it is very economical and I can always find a parking space, even in the busy summer season. Now, I will agree with the majority that the young people who rent the mopeds in the summer really abuse the use of mopeds.
They ride in the middle of the road, doing 20 mph in a 45 mph zone. They ride double, which is a disaster, as they lose control. The young people think of the mopeds as a toy, and they forget that a moped is a registered motor vehicle.
Yet, let’s not blame everything on the operators of mopeds. Most car drivers give the moped the right of way, but there are plenty of drivers who try to run us off the road. Young bucks in their pickup trucks can be a scary experience, as they try to climb right up on your back in an attempt to intimidate you.
There is no question in my mind: I believe the rental of mopeds in the Vineyard will eventually be outlawed. However, there will still be a minority of private moped drivers, and I ask the community to take us into consideration.
