Brock Callen Jr. pumps air into his kite at Lucy Vincent Beach. —Valerie Sonnenthal

It’s school vacation week following a weekend of Easter festivities and perfect weather. Lucy Vincent Beach was filled with visiting families and locals, and even kiteboarder Brock Callen Jr. pumped up his kite and headed out to enjoy the wind and waves. It was the first weekend for Susan Pacheco and Doug Seward’s newest venture in Menemsha, so if you want to check out the great antiques, art, and Susan’s spectacular swimming paintings at Creekville (in Jane Slater’s old space on Basin Road), call 774-563-8374 for their hours. Chilmark Chocolates has closed until Thursday, May 4. And congratulations to Chilmark’s newest police Sergeant Sean Slavin; we are so lucky to have you!

This is the last week at Pathways. On Thursday, April 20, “Ocean Frontiers III: Leaders in Ocean Stewardship & the New Blue Economy,” a truly unique and hopeful ocean film that chronicles our efforts to plan for a healthy, safe, and sustainable future, will be screened. It explores the intersection of national security, maritime commerce, fishing, and recreation, plus expanding industries such as offshore wind energy and aquaculture, coupled with scientific discovery. The film tells the story of how ocean planning helps us manage and balance all the uses of our ocean to keep it thriving for generations to come. Aimee Bushman, the ocean planning outreach manager for the Conservation Law Foundation in Boston, will provide national ocean policy and ocean planning info prior to the film, and facilitate a post-film Q and A focusing on priorities related to Martha’s Vineyard. Saturday, April 22, is the final night of this year’s Pathways season. Come enjoy cake and champagne on a night including performances by Matt Stamas, Natalie Lurie, Dean Rosenthal and Sian Williams, Mark Lovewell, Christina Montoya, and Episode 4 of the Barnyard Saints Video Blog. All are welcome. Doors open at 6:30 pm, programs begin at 7 pm.

It’s school vacation all week, and the Chilmark library is hosting an Open Gaming day on Thursday, April 20, with a variety of board games and Wii games in the meeting room. On Saturday, April 22, enjoy a 2 pm movie matinee featuring an animated film that tells the story of a boy wandering through a strange world while looking for his father. Snacks served at all events. On Wednesday, April 26, from 5 to 6:30 pm, the Architecture Lecture Series continues with David Fixler’s talk on “Building the Future: Modern Architecture in New England and America.” Starting in the late 1930s, the Cape and Islands attracted some of the prime movers of modern architecture, including Bauhaus luminaries as well as self-taught American designers and builders. Some of these modern thinkers found their way to the woods of Chilmark. These thoughtful designers made homes for themselves in the splendid isolation of the area, and helped establish a vibrant creative community. This lecture series will introduce this classic style of architecture and reconstruct the down-to-earth lifestyle it fostered. All programs are free. For questions, call 508-645-3360.

On Friday, April 21, from 7 to 9 pm, head over to the Ag Hall for “Putting Atmospheric Carbon In Its Place: Out of the Air and In the Soil,” a free discussion of ways to increase soil carbon content in farm fields and gardens to improve productivity and reduce carbon dioxide greenhouse gas. The talk features Julie Rawson, executive director of the Northeast Organic Farmers Association (NOFA), Massachusetts, and Jack Kittredge, NOFA soil carbon program coordinator and editor of the Natural Farmer.

Be sure to check out Chilmark artist James Langlois’ exhibit “Mostly Black and White” at the Martha’s Vineyard Playhouse Art Space on Church Street in Vineyard Haven, up from April 21 through May 18. Stop by the opening reception on Saturday, April 22, from 5 to 6:30 pm. Regular gallery hours are Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays from 2 to 5 pm.

Please note there is a special town meeting beginning at 7 pm prior to the regular town meeting at 7:30 pm on Monday, April 24. Town elections will be held on Wednesday, April 26, from noon to 8 pm; and don’t forget the 39th Women’s Symposium will be held on Saturday, April 29, from 9 am to noon.

Pizza Nights continue on Tuesdays at the Chilmark Community Church; all are welcome to enjoy some good company.

Have a great week.
