Martha’s Vineyard Horse Council announced two equestrian events for the coming year. According to a press release, the council will be hosting a trail ride from State Forest Headquarters on April 30. The trail ride follows a set course and is ridden at the rider’s chosen pace. It is not competitive. On Sept.10, the annual hunter pace will be held, commencing from the West Tisbury School parking lot.

A hunter pace is a competitive event derived from foxhunting. The objective is to match an undisclosed pace set by the host riders. The team which completes the course in the time closest to the ideal is placed first. Teams of two or more riders follow an outdoor course laid out over terrain which is meant to simulate the riding conditions encountered during a foxhunt — through open country and along wooded trails.

In 2010, the Martha’s Vineyard Horse Council hosted its first hunter pace in the Manuel F. Correllus State Forest, located in the heart of the Island. Since then, there has been a hunter pace each fall. Riders of all ages (8 to 80) and disciplines are welcome to participate. The course contains a variety of jumps, all of which are optional. Traditionally there’s a potluck and raffle enjoyed by both riders and spectators at the end. In order to host this, the MVHC relies on participation and donations of volunteers and sponsors. All proceeds benefit the William H. Honey Memorial scholarship. For more information contact either Stephanie Dreyer at swdreyer@yahoo.com or Tara Whiting at tarjw@yahoo.com.
