Martha’s Vineyard is poised to get a share of $175,000 set aside for shellfish propagation in the House budget for Dukes, Barnstable, and Nantucket counties, according to a press release issued by State Representative Dylan Fernandes.

The $175,000 is part of $225,000 secured by Rep. Fernandes during budget negotiations this week. The shellfish money is likely to be evenly distributed among the three counties.

Shellfish propagation is significant because it not only boosts the stocks available to fishermen, but also benefits water quality, with shellfish removing nitrogen and other impurities from the water, the release states.

Meanwhile, Island residents will also receive $25,000 to fund transportation vouchers for medical care and substance recovery programs through Martha’s Vineyard Community Services. The money will help Vineyard residents receive care in Falmouth.

Mr. Fernandes has secured more funds for his local communities than any other newly elected representative, according to the press release. He was voted as treasurer of the freshman class in the House.

Senate approval and, ultimately, the governor’s signature are still required.
