The Vineyard Gazette has acquired Martha’s Vineyard Online, MVOL.com, a well-known online visitor guide for the Island.

“We talked to them on and off about the possibility of merging or doing a joint venture, and ultimately we came to an agreement that an acquisition was the best way to go,” Jane Seagrave, publisher of the Vineyard Gazette, told The Times on Wednesday.

Ms. Seagrave described the relationship with MVOL as a good fit for the Vineyard Gazette media group, and one that looks to boost its online interaction with the Island’s visitor market. The Gazette will continue to run MVOL as its own brand, but it now is “part of their umbrella,” she said.

“It’s a natural strategic fit for us,” Ms. Seagrave said. She did not disclose the purchase price.

Joe Gallagher, president and CEO of Aritaur, the parent company of MVOL.com, could not be reached for comment on the sale.
