On June 4, the Tisbury Town Picnic was held on the grounds of the Tashmoo Springs Pumping Station building, and continued its tradition of old-fashioned family fun for Islanders. The picnic was postponed last weekend because of rain, but on Sunday, the sun shone down on an afternoon of music, games, rowing, and picnicking. The Flying Elbows provided an upbeat musical accompaniment to an afternoon of carry-in picnic food supplemented by hot dogs (provided by Cronig’s), watermelon (provided by Stop and Shop), and ice cream (provided by the Picnic Committee). Adults and children enjoyed a leisurely row around the pond, and children engaged in chalk painting and a variety of races. An alpaca visit rounded out the day’s fun. For Denys Wortman, a longtime member of the restoration and picnic committee, this event is about tradition and history. Normally held on Memorial Day weekend, the event was canceled last year due to rain for the first time. With this year’s forecast again calling for rain, Mr. Wortman said, “We didn’t want to cancel two years in a row, so we moved it a week, and thought we would see who comes.” Aase Jones, also a member of both the picnic and restoration committees, said of the picnic, “It’s always a wonderful event. It’s a good, country-type picnic that brings the whole Island together.”
