The Edgartown board of selectmen enthusiastically agreed to let the owners of a house at 40 South Summer St. replace a sycamore maple with a descendant of a historic pagoda tree.

The pagoda “would be an enhancement to the front corner of the property,” tree warden Stuart Fuller wrote in a letter supporting the swap. “This is an innovative and clever approach to replacing a tree.”

The request was made by Courtney Brady and her son, Tom Dunlop, at Monday’s meeting.

Ms. Brady said the tree is a third-generation descendant of the historic South Water Street pagoda.

“How many towns have trees that have geneology?” chairman Arthur Smadbeck said.

In other business, the board issued a warning letter to Back Yard Taco, after the restaurant took a vacation without properly notifying the town. Businesses with liquor licenses have to be open at least three days per week, under the town’s regulations.

Selectman Michael Donaroma reported that dredged sand will be placed on Collins Beach “so it doesn’t look like a parking lot.”
