The MV varsity Babe Ruth Hammerheads opened their season this past weekend with a doubleheader in Wareham. In game one, with heavy rains, the Vineyard fell to the Wareham Bulldogs, 10-0. A tough fourth inning with four walks and two bases-loaded errors turned a 3-0 game into a one-sided affair. Jared Regan and Jake Howell managed the two Vineyard hits in a well-pitched game by the Bulldogs.
In game two, the Vineyard bounced back with a 12-2 victory over reigning champs the Gateway Tigers. Jared Regan and Jake Howell limited the Tigers to just six hits and two late runs. Regan, Howell, Hunterfox Jakusik, Ryan Mendez, and Andrew Marchand all had run-producing hits in the first inning to help the Vineyard jump out to an early 5-0 lead. Jakusik would finish the day with four runs scored. Leo Neville, Parker Ben David, Nate Sawyer, and Isaac Richards also chipped in with a hit apiece. Defensively, Jeremy Regan spearheaded three double plays at shortstop, and Cam Moore retrieved a couple of long fly balls to center field.
Next up is a home doubleheader at the Shark Tank, against Fall River, on Saturday, May 5, at 11 am.
