Prom-goers at the May 19 Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School (MVRHS) junior prom will have vouchers for unlimited taxi rides that night, thanks to the work and planning of junior class president Owen Engler and the MVRHS prom committee.
Engler told the MVRHS school committee (to applause) on Monday night that the free taxi ride vouchers, a first, are included in the prom ticket package and will be accepted by all Island taxi companies. Wait, there’s more. Because the junior class has been busy fundraising over the past year, prom tickets are only $35 this year, taxis included, compared with $50-65 pricing in the past.
“Ticket affordability is the number one complaint we’ve heard from students about the prom,” Engler told the Times Tuesday morning, adding that his class has established a taxi fund and will leave a few hundred dollars in it for the sophomore class to use in order to keep the prom night taxis rolling in the future.
The prom will be held between 6:30 and 10 pm at the Winnetu Oceanside Resort in Katama with an after-party from 10 pm to 1 am at The Barn Bowl & Bistro in Oak Bluffs.
