On Saturday, Oct. 6, from 3:30 to 5 pm, all are invited to an art reception at the West Tisbury library to honor the artwork of Heather Sommers. According to a press release, this exhibit, titled “Re-Frames,” features wall art composed of clay, wood, paper, and paint. This exhibit will be displayed in the library’s Community Room throughout October. Both the exhibit and reception are free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served.
Sommers says of the exhibit, “My interest is the exploration of what makes ‘picture’ and what makes ‘frame.’ What carries the story? Is it the center, the surround, or can they be one image? As a lifelong artist who works in many media, I am most proficient as a ceramic sculptor. I also paint, and have an affinity for graphics. In 2014, I got a bee in my bonnet to explore combining the use of bas-relief in clay, with sketches from life drawing. Could I make the disparate media complement each other and become one entity? Thus, the root of this series of re-frames explores nature, human figure, children’s art, and 3D abstraction.”
