At approximately 4:30 pm Friday, police and Edgartown emergency services responded to a Toyota Tacoma that had rolled over into the woods while traveling on Metcalf Drive, a high-traffic connector between Edgartown–Vineyard Haven Road and West Tisbury Road. Edgartown Police Sgt. Joel DeRoche told The Times officials believe the truck was traveling outbound on Metcalf Drive when it rolled over into the brush.
Edgartown Police Chief Bruce McNamee later told The Times the vehicle was heading toward Edgartown–West Tisbury Road when the driver lost control and flipped the vehicle. All occupants of the vehicle were under 17 years old. There is a pending prosecution involved with the accident. The operator, a male from West Tisbury whom police declined to identify, has been summonsed to appear in court for multiple citations, including a marked lane violation, speeding, and negligent operation of a motor vehicle. McNamee said the driver had a junior operator license, or a learner’s permit, which does not allow the operator to transport additional passengers under the age of 18 (other than immediate family members) for the first six months.
“We are very thankful that nobody was seriously injured in this accident. To roll a truck like that and not have anyone hurt is pretty amazing,” McNamee said.
