The Makos swim team hosted the Southeastern Mass. Swim League (SEMSL) Distance Meet on Sunday at the YMCA of Martha’s Vineyard. Nineteen Makos participated in the event, five of whom were younger than 10 years old and competing in their first Distance Meet, and included teams from Nantucket, Eastham, and Marshfield.
The events consisted of the freestyle (500 meters and 200 meters), 400 individual medley, butterfly (100 and 200) and the breaststroke (100 and 200).
Notable results (with age groups) included:
500 freestyle: Gaby Carr (15 and over), Oliver Dorr (13 and 14), and Ryan Laslovich (15 and over) each placed first.
200 freestyle: Michael Calheta, Clovis Smith, and Roland Georges (8 and under) placed first, third, and fourth; Nora Motahari, Claus Smith, Grady Stalgren, Logan Schaefer, and Eleonora Duncheva (9 and 10) placed ninth, second, third, fifth, and 11th; Everett Dorr, Simon Hammarlund, Ronan Mullin, Lily Haynes, and Sylvia Carroll (11 and 12) placed second, third, sixth, fifth and 10th; AnnaBelle Brothers, Oliver Dorr, Christian Flanders, and Jack Crawford (13 and 14) placed first, first, third, and fourth; Gaby Carr and Ryan Laslovich (15 and over) placed first and third .
100 butterfly: Lily Haynes and Ronan Mullin (11 and 12) placed first and fourth; Oliver Dorr (13 and 14) placed first.
200 breaststroke: Jack Crawford (13 and 14) placed first.
100 backstroke: Michael Calheta (8 and under) placed first, Nora Motahari, Eleonora Duncheva, Claus Smith, and Grady Stalgren (9 and 10) placed eighth, 10th, second, and third; Lily Haynes, Simon Hammarlund, Andrue Carr, and Ronan Mullin (11 and 12) placed eighth, first, second, and third; Annabelle Brothers, Christian Flanders (13 and 14) placed first and first; Gaby Carr (15 and over) placed first.
100 breaststroke: Michael Calheta and Roland Georges (8 and under) placed first and second; Sylvia Carroll, Everett Dorr, Simon Hammarlund (11 and 12) placed fourth, first, and second; Oliver Dorr and Jack Crawford (13 and 14) placed first and second.
200 backstroke: Gaby Carr (15 and over) placed first.
200 individual medley: Michael Calheta (8 and under) placed first; Nora Motahari, Claus Smith, and Grady Stalgren (9 and 10) placed fifth, second, and third; Lily Haynes, Everett Dorr, Simon Hammarlund, Ronan Mullin, and Andrue Carr (11 and 12) placed sixth, second, third, fourth,and sixth; Annabelle Brothers and Oliver Dorr (13 and 14) placed first and second; Gaby Carr and Ryan Laslovich (15 and over) both placed first.
Overall, this was the largest turnout for the Makos swim team in one meet, and they are hoping for another big turnout for the last SEMSL championship meet, in Nantucket on March 23 and 24.
