The Martha’s Vineyard Masters swim team, though smaller in numbers than in prior years, had a big impact during the second weekend of the 2019 New England LMSC Short Course (Yards) Championships at Harvard University. The weekend featured three days of 51 different events. Points were awarded by place within gender and age group. The Vineyard finished 22nd overall out of 77 teams, and fifth out of 20 small teams. The Vineyard had only seven swimmers (five women and two men), and only four of the seven competed in more than one day.
Jen Passafiume placed in eight events, including a third (1000 free), fourth (100 fly), eighth (200 free), two ninths (50 free and 50 breast), and an 11th (500 free), 12th (100 breast), and 13th (50 fly). Rainy Goodale, who could only swim on Friday, fought through a knee injury to place in all four of her events. She placed second in the 50 breast and fourth in the 50 free, 100 fly, and 200 back. Christina Colarusso placed in six events, including seventh (50 breast and 200 back), eighth (50 free), 10th (50 fly), 12th (50 back), and 16th (100 free). Elizabeth Stuart placed fifth in the 100 individual medley (IM) and sixth in the 50 fly. Meghan Hanrahan, in her first Vineyard meet, placed sixth (200 free), ninth (500 free), and 15th (100 IM).
The Chatinover family supplied both of the men. Keith placed in six events, taking third (500 free), fourth (50 back and 200 breast), eighth (200 free), 10th (200 IM), and 11th (100 free). Keith’s dad Jonathan had his best Masters meet, finishing no worse than seventh in all 13 of his events. After a first in the 1000 free on distance day, he had a first in the 200 breast (2:43.60), his last event of the meet, four second places (100 breast, 200 free, 200 IM, and 400 IM), a third (50 breast), two fourths (200 back and 50 fly), three fifths (100 fly, 500 free, and 100IM), and a seventh (100 free).
The Vineyard entered one relay, a mixed (two men and two women) 200 medley relay, with Christina, Jonathan, Keith, and Jen placing fifth.
The Martha’s Vineyard Masters Swim Team is based at the YMCA and coached by Rainy Goodale. Any person 18 years and older is eligible to join the Masters program and compete.
