On Thursday, April 11, at 5:30 pm, the Martha’s Vineyard Youth Task Force presents a talk with Dr. Martha Straus, local psychologist, professor, and author, at the West Tisbury library. According to a press release, Dr. Straus will discuss how understanding the “why” of teen behaviors might not be as helpful as figuring out how to be less reactive and more compassionate as parents. Through presentation, discussion, and activities, Dr. Straus will discuss reflecting on our own triggers, and offer strategies for staying regulated and present using the adult brain and a tender heart, in turn helping our children feel calmer and safer. This event is free and open to the public. Refreshments served.
Martha B. Straus, Ph.D., is a professor in the department of clinical psychology at Antioch University New England Graduate School in Keene, N.H., and adjunct instructor in psychiatry at Dartmouth Medical School.
