A boater was rescued Friday afternoon after falling off his boat and getting swept away in a rip current, Oak Bluffs Fire Chief John Rose told The Times.

The man’s boat had engine trouble, and as he was attempting to fix it, he fell into the water, Noah Hammett, a member of the Oak Bluffs harbormaster staff, said. While rescue crews were headed to the scene, a good Samaritan in a Boston Whaler rescued him and helped him get back to his boat.

The man didn’t require medical treatment.
