Artist Margo Datz visits the Chilmark library on Wednesday, July 24, at 5 pm for an Artist Talk and Reception. According to a press release, Datz will speak about her influences and process, focusing on the pieces she recently completed for the children’s room at the Chilmark library, inspired by Thomas Hart Benton and local history.
For nearly 40 years, the release says, Datz has been painting from one end of the Island to the other. She arrived from New Orleans in Edgartown in 1979, and began her painting career with the creation of the legendary Hot Tin Roof. Initially a sculptor, Datz found the “painting in the round” aspect of wall murals to be a natural transition from 3D to 2D. Since then, she has painted hundreds of murals, for homes, businesses, and public institutions, on-Island and across the country.
Datz’s passion for the past 10 years has been public art, including at the Old Whaling Church, Martha’s Vineyard Hospital, the YMCA, Vineyard Haven and Oak Bluffs Steamship Authority terminals, and the Oak Bluffs, Edgartown, and Chilmark children’s libraries. Datz has also illustrated five children’s books, four for Carly Simon, and published her own book with Atria, “A Survival Guide for Landlocked Mermaids,” now in its 11th year of print.
