John Schaefer was named chairman of the board of trustees for Martha’s Vineyard Hospital (MVH) and Windemere Rehabilitation Center (WNR) at the board’s meeting Friday, according to a press release from the hospital.
Schaefer replaces Sandy Ray, who served as chairman through the past year, and has served for more than 25 years in various capacities on the board and board committees.
“We are grateful for the leadership Sandy displayed all his years serving on our board. His quiet but steady guidance was valuable to me as I settled into my own role as CEO,” Denise Schepici, the hospital’s CEO, said in a press release. “His historic perspective and eye on the future of where we hope to bring MVH and WNR struck just the right balance to bring us in to a new and exciting phase of the organization.”
According to the release, Schaefer has been a seasonal resident of Martha’s Vineyard since 1978. He and his wife Pam live in Edgartown. His career in investment banking led him to various roles when he served as president and chief operating officer of Morgan Stanley’s Global Wealth Management Group until his retirement in 2006. Schaefer has been a member of the board of Martha’s Vineyard Hospital and Windemere since 2011. He is also a member of the board of the Sheriff’s Meadow Foundation.
“I have long considered Martha’s Vineyard an important part of our life, and I am grateful that I have the opportunity to serve the community in this capacity,” Schaefer said in the release. “As chairman, I look forward to collaborating with my fellow board members to continue to bring quality healthcare to our Island and ensure we execute on our strategic plan for the hospital and Windemere. I am confident we can meet future challenges and continue fulfilling our mission to care for the community,” said Schaefer.
In another announcement, Dr. Pieter Pil was named as an elected member of the board of trustees. Dr. Pil is the chief medical officer at MVH, and lives in Vineyard Haven with his wife, emergency room physician Dr. Karen Casper, along with their four children.
