A tractor trailer with “Ditech Transportation” written on its side caused a backup on several Vineyard Haven roads Tuesday morning as it attempted to get to the Steamship Authority via Main Street.
At approximately 10:15 am, police blocked off Main Street as the trailer attempted to back onto Spring Street. A reporter at the scene watched as the truck backed up Spring Street to the intersection with Franklin Street. Making the situation even more delicate were the cars that park along Spring Street.
The big problem is that the roadway isn’t big enough to accommodate a trailer, and drivers tend to rely on their GPS, not understanding that, Sgt. Chris Habekost told The Times. “He made a big mistake coming down Main Street. The roadway isn’t big enough,” Habekost said. He suggested the GPS systems be updated to warn truck drivers of narrow roadways.
Main Street reopened at 10:30 am once the truck backed onto Spring Street. By 10:40, the whole scene had been cleared, and the truck was on its way to the ferry.
