Two New Year’s Eve parties drew Islanders to Oak Bluffs to ring in 2020. Joanne Cassidy and Mike Benjamin and their big band performed a mix of music to a crowded P.A. Club, with guests dressed to the nines. The Roaring 20s–themed party featured flapper dresses and suits. Partygoers went all out.
The Ritz’ “Sparkly AF” New Year’s Eve party also pulled a packed room, with music by Johnny Hoy and the Bluefish, followed by DJ Ricky Prime. Guests dressed in sparkly attire, and the dive bar transformed into one giant disco ball.
The next morning, 40 runners and walkers braved the cold and wind at the annual Freezin’ for a Reason 5K and Polar Plunge to benefit veterans and the West Tisbury School.
While the race, which starts and ends at the Long Point Wildlife Refuge parking lot, is the main event, it’s the unofficial “polar plunge” after the finish that truly tests participants’ fortitude. Though not the winner of the 5K, Mike Alberice was the first brave soul to take the plunge.
Most plunge participants did only a quick dive into the 42° water (the same as the morning’s air temperature), running quickly back to the warm embrace of a dry towel and heated car.
