Heard on Main Street: Take a deep breath. It calms the mind.

Tonight there is a special meeting at 5 pm in the Cornell Theater to discuss environmental articles that will be on the warrant for town meeting. These will cover anything from renewable energy to getting rid of plastic bottles. I am not sure what is happening with the proposed ban on polystyrene plastics in town. I may not be clear on what these are. Find out at 5 pm at Town Hall.

There is a first time for everything. I was in my car on the ferry, enjoying a new book as I crossed the water. A sudden tapping at the rear of my car startled me. I looked around, I looked in the side mirrors, the rear mirror — there was nothing there. I heard it again, again I looked all around. There was no one in sight.

The tapping began over my head, on the roof of the car. Then a huge fat pigeon slid down the windshield right in front of me. He began tapping around the windshield wiper, and sat up with some pine needles in his beak. When he flew up and away, I thought, Maybe he’s building a nest. He came right back for more. He collected more pine needles, and checked out other cars nearby. When a loud little dog started barking, the pigeon flew over to the other side of the freight deck.

Spring forward this Saturday night, March 7, by turning your clocks ahead. We are bringing back Daylight Saving Time. That means we will have to go back to getting up in the dark again.

I went off-Island for my birthday. The best presents were the repairs by my son. Recently the wheel fell off my rollator (for you young ones, that’s a walker on wheels, with a seat). The wheel fell off as we were putting it back into my car. Putting it in and out had loosened the handles that kept many parts attached. My wonderful son took me and it to Lowe’s, where he found the right size bolts and something to make them stick in place. I was afraid what might happen if the wheel fell off again.

I needed my son again when I knocked out the lens while cleaning my glasses. You are not allowed to laugh when I tell you he found there were a lot of little screws loose. So this was a grand birthday, with him fixing lots of little things for me.

On Sunday, March 8, at 1 pm you can join the new potluck cookbook book club at the Vineyard Haven library. Choose a recipe from “The New Mediterranean Diet Cookbook,” on display at the main desk. Mark it with a sticky note, and ask for a photocopy of the recipe. You are expected to make it for Sunday. Bring yours in, and taste some others.

“The Good Liar” is the featured movie on Tuesday, March 10, at 7 pm. A career con artist meets a well-off widow online. He finds himself caring about her. Features Helen Mirren, so it must be good. Rated R.

I am getting my income taxes done tomorrow, if I have gathered all the right papers. We will see about that.

Speaking of taxes, I have found paying town taxes online both easy and so useful. And this is not always the case with bill-paying online. I tried it first on the town property tax, and was delighted when it seemed to work just fine. I just did the excise tax. I am so happy that I get email to say it has been done.

It is Daffodil Time, time for the M.V. Cancer Support Group fundraiser to provide financial support for our year-round Island cancer patients. Daffodil bunches, at $10, will be sold on Friday, March 13, from 10 to 2 pm in the M.V. Hospital lobby, and on Saturday, March 14, from 9 to 4:30 pm in Cronig’s in Vineyard Haven, Reliable, and Stop & Shop in Edgartown.

Big bunches of birthday balloon wishes go out to Evan Kristal on Saturday. Sunday belongs to Michelle O’Donnell and Kasara Bruni. Happy birthday to Sue Merrill and Dorothy Gould on Monday. Whit Griswold takes the cake on Tuesday.

Heard on Main Street: Nobody cares if you can’t dance well. Just get up and dance.
