The Vineyard Haven library has a busy week ahead, according to a press release. The Secret Lives of Lobsters presentation takes place on Sunday, March 15, at 2 pm. Jelle Atema is a sensory biologist interested in understanding how underwater animals perceive their environment, especially their use of chemical signals. In nearly 200 publications, he has expanded the understanding of the underwater signals that marine animals use to recognize and find food, home, mates, and individuals. These signals are driving the evolution of sensory organs that are remarkably similar in function despite great differences in appearance, such as the nose of the lobster. The broad similarity helps design models for use in marine robotics. Recommended reading for this presentation is: “The Secret Life of Lobsters” by Trevor Corson (limited number of copies available at the library)

On Tuesday, March 17, at 7 pm, the documentary “The Queen of Ireland” will screen at the library. This film follows Ireland’s most famous drag queen and self-styled accidental activist, Pandora “Panti” Bliss. Created by Rory O’Neill, according to the press release, Panti is a wittily incisive performer with charisma to burn, who becomes a figurehead in the fight for LGBT rights in Ireland and a vital part of the successful campaign for marriage equality. Directed by Conor Horgan, the film builds up a multi-faceted picture of a complex and compelling character through behind the scenes footage and interviews with friends, peers and protégés. The documentary is Rated R.

The Vineyard Haven library hosts an Advance Care Planning Workshop on Thursday, March 19, at 10 am. Are you interested in making sure your documents are in place should you be in an accident?
